Spring Home Improvements

Some of the things we need to do besides getting the yard ready for summer is to take a look at the exterior of our homes!

Let's start at the top: Your Roof. It’s extremely important to make sure that your roof is in good shape, it protects your entire home! Examine it to see if there’s any damage from tree limbs or if you’ve lost any shingles due to storms or high winds. Shingles that have cracks, loose granules or appear loose or are buckling need to be taken care of.  Flashing around your skylights, chimneys, and vents should be checked and repaired if necessary.

While you are looking up - take a peek at your gutters.  Are they draining properly? Are they loose or leaking? It’s best to have your gutters cleaned twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. If you’d like to eliminate cleaning gutters all together there’s gutter protection systems like Waterfall Gutter toppers. Gutter toppers keep debris such as leaves, pine needles, etc out so that your gutters can continue to work at maximum efficiency.

Spring is a great time for cleaning. While you’re spring cleaning the inside of your home, don't forget your windows. Inspect the caulk and weather stripping around windows. You want to make sure that the warm summer air stays outside and your cool air stays in! If you notice condensation or fogging on your window panes it could mean that the weather seal may have failed. This is a good time to consider a window inspection and possible replacement.

Two areas of the home that we seem to ignore are the attic and basement. These areas should be checked for unwanted critters and insects. Search for signs that insects and critters have colonized. Let’s not forget to check for dampness and mold! Mold can take the form of gray, white or black blotches. Search aggressively for mold, which often takes the form of gray or black blotches. Proper insulation and good ventilation will deter mold growth in the attic. Act now to prevent the problem from developing in the warmer months ahead. Having the proper ventilation and insulation will deter mold growth in the attic and help prevent issues from.

Decks and patios are meant to be enjoyed in the months ahead! Do you have warped, splintered, loose boards or natural debris that’s accumulated? Don’t let it keep you from enjoying your summer oasis! To prolong the life and appearance of your outside oasis’s it may be time to clean, stain and reseal it!
