The importance of Attic Ventilation

Wednesday, June 8th, 2022 by Maria Sotire

Your attic may be an area that you don't think about, but it is a very important part of your home.  Your attic supports your roof and also plays a big part in the temperature of the house.  A properly vented attic is designed to allow for the continued, unrestricted flow of air.  Your intakes are the soffit vents at the base of the roof and your ridge vent at the peak is the top exhaust that allows the air to flow out.

Science teaches us that hot air rises, but if your attic is not adequately vented the hot air voyages to places we don't want it to go.  Instead of having the hot air go up and out, it will find its way into your living spaces.  Which means higher energy bills to cool your home in both the warmer months to cool and colder months to heat.

Not only does an incorrectly vented attic affect your home, energy bills, and overall comfort it can have a negative effect on your roof.

The goal is to reduce heat and humidity during the summer and reduce humidity in the winter.

Prolonging the life of your roofing shingles is a big advantage of proper ventilation.  Damage to the roof can be lifting and peeling, shortening the lifespan of your asphalt shingles.

Some signs that your roof & attic are not properly vented are as follows:

1.  Inflated cooling and heating bills

2.  Deterioration of any metal in the attic space

3.  Any sign of moisture issues in the attic (not caused by leaks)

4.  Furrows or rippling of your shingles
